Ice Cream in a Baggie - Version 1

Many thanks to Georgia Cox, who posted this recipe to the WAGGGS-L Mailing List!

This recipe makes enough ice cream for 9 kids.

Directions: In a bowl blend: 2 cups 1/2 & 1/2 cream, 1-1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 tsp salt, and 3 tsp vanilla. Pour solution into 9 Ziploc baggies. Try to remove as much air as possible. Seal tightly! In additional 9 Ziploc baggies, place crushed ice and 3 tsp rock salt. Place 1/2 & 1/2 sealed baggie mixture in ice/rock salt baggie. Seal securely.

Shake, shake, shake!!!!!!! .... for quite awhile. Have the kids wear mittens or use socks to keep their hands warm. When it has thickened sufficiently, throw away the ice/rock salt mixture. Eat the yummy vanilla mixture right out of the baggie!!

Ice Cream in a Baggie - Version 2

Thanks to Barb Robinson, who shared this recipe with me from her Guiding Gourmet session at CM'99 Manitoba.

Ingredients:

One teaspoon white sugar
¼ cup whole milk (not skimmed)
¼ teaspoon vanilla
Equipment:
Two sandwich sized Ziploc baggie for each person
One larger sized Ziploc baggie per four people
Newspaper
One large bath towel per four people
1 Spoon per person
Coarse salt
¼ teaspoon for measuring
¼ cup for measuring
Instructions:
Measure out the ingredients into one small Ziploc bag. Zip it closed. Write name on bag with marker. Zip it inside another small Ziploc bag. Put 4 of these small baggies into a large baggie. Add ½ cup of rock salt and 20 ice cubes to the baggie. Zip it shut. Wrap it in newsprint. Wrap the package like a tootsie roll with a large towel. Participants take turns shake the tootsie roll for about 5 mins.
