Wheel Cover Oven

Thanks very much to Wendy Baker, who shared this neat cooking method with the Guiding Mailing List!

There are four parts to the oven.

1. The bottom of your oven requires a special deep bowl shaped wheel cover. The one I (Wendy) uses comes from a 1981 - 1997 1 ton Ford Truck. This makes the base for your oven.

2. The top wheel cover is a more conventional shape and just ask for one that is stainless steel, contains no asbestos (yes some of them contain asbestos... .not the best for cooking) and covers the top of your 1 ton wheel cover leaving space for your cooking pan. Hint - take your pan to the wrecking yard when you go to choose your wheel covers. The wrecking yard should give these to you free... .if not tell them "Earl Baker from Reg Brown's says they are free..." :-)

3. You need is a dollar store metal rack that will overhang the bottom wheel cover.

4. Metal cooking pan (a stainless steel cake pan works well)

To visualize: You have your 1 ton cover on the bottom, which looks like a bowl, or dog food dish.  Then you have a rack, on which you cake pan sits and then the wheel cover which sits on top.

To Use: Place charcoal briquettes in bottom wheel cover, place rack on top, your item to be cooked on the rack and the wheel cover on top. There will be some air space and this is a good thing. The rule of thumb for charcoal briquettes works as your temperature gauge. 1 briquette equals 30 degrees of temperature for your oven. (Same as for a box oven). Some ideas for things to cook in this oven include muffins, snack cakes, and pies.
