FUN

Thanks very much to Chris Rosenthal, who created this neat activity and shared it with the Guiding Mailing List!

Each team of girls needs 13 people, 2 compasses, rope or bright wool, scissors and 2 tent stakes. The girls follow the directions below to spell out the word FUN. One person stands at the starting point holding a end of rope; the rest of the team takes turns being the moving person as each compass direction is read and the distance paced while rolling out the rope. When the distance is reached, the person pacing stays put, holding onto the rope. Another person takes over reading the next direction etc. After so many directions, the instructions read "cut the rope" and "start the rope" - this signals the beginning and end of individual letters. When the team finishes, their 13 members should be spaced out in the field, with a rope running between them. The rope should spell out the word FUN.

Directions:

1. One person at starting point holding end of rope.

2. Walk 10 paces NORTH, holding the rope.

3. Walk 5 paces EAST and put stake in ground. Loop rope around it, then turn around and go 5 paces WEST. Hand rope to next person in line, then go back and stand at the stake.

4, Walk 10 paces NORTH.

5. Walk 20 paces EAST. Cut rope - you hold end and pass the rest to next person in line.

6. Walk 5 paces EAST, then start rope again.

7. Walk 20 paces SOUTH.

8. Walk 10 paces EAST.

9. Walk 20 paces NORTH. Cut rope - you hold end and pass the rest to. next person in line.

10. Walk 5 paces EAST, then start rope again.

11. Walk 20 paces SOUTH and put stake in ground. Loop rope around it, then turn around and go 20 paces NORTH. Hand rope to next person in line, then go back and stand at the stake.
