Mexican Squares

Thanks very much to Tiger (aka Dooreen) Rousseau for creating this game and for posting this game to the WAGGGS-L Mailing List!

Here is another game I came up with that would be suitable for older Guides, Pathfinders and Senior Branches. (12-17 yrs). Remember the old game show, Hollywood Squares? The idea was 9 people sitting 3 X 3 to form a square would receive a question and had to talk about whether it was true or not. One of the two contestants would agree or disagree with the celebrity and if he was right he would get the square. It is basically tic-tac-toe, and that is how I played it. I had nine chairs set out and put a girl on each chair. Two contestants were chosen and the rest were the audience, or you could make two teams and they could confer together to decide true or false. I used some of the questions from the Jeopardy game to determine which team went first, then they choose one of the girls sitting in the "squares". I read out one of the following questions, and here is where the fun begins. The chosen square can either agree or disagree with the statement but the important part is they have to explain why they believe it to be so. They must try to be convincing and the best actors are more successful. Of course, the team that gets the first tic-tac-toe wins. When a team was successful in getting a square, I had the girl on the chair either hold up a circle or an x. Each girl on a square had one of each.

The statements all relate to Mexico (Our Cabana). It was my challenge to come up with an activity for Camp Blomidon as we were Cabana site.

As you can see, all the truths about Our Cabana and Mexico were chosen to make it easy to disagree with given the right provocation.
