Plates
Thanks very much to Helen Pemberton, who e-mailed this game to me!
You will need five small plates (or other containers, once you understand the game), and an object to hide under one of the plates. Lay the 5 plates down on the ground from left to right. You need 2 people who KNOW the method - they are "psychic". One of those people leaves the room, and the other hides an object under one of the plates (get the Guides to choose to avoid suspicious cheating on the part of those guessing!). The other person comes back into the room and has to guess which plate the object is hidden under!
To figure out which plate the object is hidden under, you set up an easy code of some sort. For example, using the word "PLATE" - the P would be assigned to the left-most plate, the L to the next and so on. When the person guessing enters the room, the other person in the know "tells" them which plate to look under by making sure that the first thing they say to the guesser as they enter the room, begins with the relevant letter. For example if the object is hidden under the third plate the letter would be A. So as the guesser enters the room you might say to them something like: "Ah, now, Sarah, can you tell me which plate the object is hidden under?" If it was under the first plate the letter is P so you might say something like: "Please can you use your psychic skills to tell us which plate to look under.", etc.
