Healthy Shopping Scavenger Hunt

WOW! Thanks so much to Yvonne Eddy, who sent me this awesome idea! She writes:

"I thought you might be interested in this scavenger hunt I created. We are using it to cover the Guide Program Discovering You - Stay Fit and Healthy. I reccomend this activity for Guides and Pathfinders. It requires an outing to the grocery store with the girls and includes community service as all the food purchased is donated to a local food bank. before the scavenger hunt, the girls will need to be familiar with Canada's Food Guide and Guide for Healthy Eating."

Materials (for each group of girls + adult chaperone):

• A copy of Canada’s Food Guide
• $25.00 store gift card
• Coin for a shopping cart
• Weekly store flyer
• Calculator
• “Donated by” tags for grocery bags

The Challenge:

Buy as much healthy food as possible for the food bank with your gift card.  Items must cover all 4 food groups from Canada’s Food Guide. You must buy a fruit and vegetable selection and at least one item for a baby. Only non perishable items can be purchased. You may have a maximum of 2 same items (i.e. 2 boxes of Kraft Dinner). The food bank requests that we avoid large family-size items where a variety of sizes are offered (i.e. canned beans in tomato sauce, canned tomatoes, soup). Items purchased must be of good value and nutritious per the Canada’s Guide for Healthy Eating. Meet near the checkout area by 7:45pm (Chaperones may switch groups for scoring). You must keep your store receipt.

Base Points:

• 1 point per serving of grain
• 2 points per serving of meat / alternate
• 2 points per serving of fruits / vegetable
• 3 points per serving of milk products (bone building ingredients!)
• *Items containing more than 1 food group:  Receive points for each food group listed in the top 3 ingredients.

Bonus Points:

• Items on the food bank’s wish list count 2 X (double) basic point value.
• 5 points if a food serving contains 20% of the Daily Value of fibre, or more.

• 5 points if there are less than 3 grams of fat per serving.

• 5 points if there are less than 140mgs of sodium per serving.

• 5 for item in weekly store flyer on sale.

• 5 if you have something to eat for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

• 10 group closest to $25 without going over.

Points Deducted:

• Deduct 5 points per item if it contains trans fats.

• Deduct 5 points if packaging is not recyclable or reusable.
