Martian Scavenger Hunt

Give each girl a film canister with a piece of wool attached through a hole in the lid. Tell them the following story:

The Martians have landed near the gate to the park or camp! They cannot leave their spaceship because they cannot breathe in our atmosphere. They have sent us a message that they would like us to help them gather items from our natural environment. All the items must fit into your film canister and you may not "pick" things, only gather things that are unattached. These items can be feathers, leaves, nuts, insects, pine needles etc. You only have 10 minutes to collect these items and you must be able to identify them.

Another way to play this is to hand out a sheet like the following:

"Aliens" from another galaxy have landed their space craft in the camp and have made contact with me. They are friendly but cannot walk easily in our atmosphere as our gravity bothers them. We have been asked to help them record information about the park and they require the following information:
