Nature Scavenger Hunt

Try to figure out the answers to the puzzles and find the things on the list below. You may or may not be able to find everything. When you find an item, check it on the list and write down where it was. This is a look-and-see hunt. Do your best not to disturb anything. Many plants are food or homes for other living creatures, so be careful as you explore. 1. You can take a horse to this, but you can't make him drink. What is this? 2. What does the early bird catch? 3. What's always greener on the other side of the fence?

Find these items, and write down where they were:
 
4. A worm.
5. A caterpillar.
6. A butterfly or moth.
7. A spider web.
8. A animal footprint.
9. A leaf with pointy edges. 
10. A pine needle.
11. Moss.
12. A cactus. 
13. A white grain of sand. 
14. A shiny, glassy rock.
15. An ant.
16. A snail.
17. A beetle.
18. A squirrel.
19. A seed.
20. A leaf with worm or insect holes.
21. A mushroom or fungus.
22. A flower.
23. A feather. 
24. A smooth rock.
25. A rock with many colours.

26. Listen for the sound of a bee.
27. Listen for the sound of trees in the wind.
28. Listen for the sound of a duck.
29. Listen for the sound of dry leaves under your feet.
30. Listen for the sound of a squirrel.

31. Smell the mud.
32. Smell a flower.
33. Smell a pine tree.
34. Smell green grass.
35. Smell old leaves.

36. Feel wet mud.
37. Feel a prickly plant. (Be careful! Not a cactus!)
38. Feel the wind on a hill.
39. Feel rotten wood.
40. Feel tree bark.

41. Watch an ant moving something.
42. Watch a spider web with an insect in it.
43. Watch a leaf falling.
44. Watch an animal eating.

45. Find a tree that has blossoms on it. Where was it?
46. Find a bird's nest in a tree. Where was it?
47. Find two insects on a tree. Describe them.
48. Choose your favourite tree and draw a picture of it.
49. Find a complete acorn and bring it back.
50. Find three different kinds of wild flowers and draw a picture of each.
51. Find a tree that has changed something else.

52. Estimate the height and circumference (how far around) of a tree taller than you are.
53. Find a butterfly and draw a picture of it.
54. Do a leaf or bark rubbing.
55. Find three different types of birds.
56. Bring back a round, a flat, and a square rock.
57. Bring back four different types of fallen leaves.
58. Bring back a ladybug, alive.

Look around, and find:
59. Something that depends on something else.
60. Something hanging around.
61. A story teller.
62. Something that is good at hiding.
63. A seed spreader.
64. A water trap.
65. A message of hope.
66. A pattern or design in nature.
67. A colourful warning.
68. A problem not yet solved.
69. Something from the area that cannot be replaced once it is used up.
70. Something extraordinary.

After you have shown these things to your leader, put everything back!
