The Brownie Story Enrolment Play

This adaptation of the traditional Brownie Enrolment Story was created by the 3rd Greendale Brownie Guiders, Pierrefonds, Qc.. Thanks very much to Janet Rossetti for sharing it with me!

Characters:

Narrator (a Guider or older girl)
Cousins (all the new Brownies to be enrolled)
Grandma (a Guider)
Wise Old Owls (all the Circle Leaders)
Spinners (all the Circle Seconds)

Narrator: Brooke and her cousins were visiting Grandma Ella in the country. Grandma Ella lived in a small brick house, surrounded by thick woods. Brooke and her cousins loved visiting Grandma Ella. In the fall, they raked and collected leaves. The fall fresh air always made them happy. Brooke and her cousins loved doing things with Grandma, but most of all they loved to hear Grandma Ella’s stories about Brownies. Grandma Ella said that Brownies were little people who helped with chores when no one was watching.

(All the new brownies (cousins) are raking leaves)

Cousin #1: I wish we knew a Brownie who would help us with our chores.

All: So do we!

Cousin #2: Tell us about Brownies, Grandma.

Grandma: No one ever sees Brownies. They lend a hand when no one is around, and they always know exactly when help is needed.

Cousin #3: Do you think there are any Brownies here?

Grandma (pointing): Brownies could be anywhere, the only one who knows where they are is the Wise Old Owl who lives in the great pine tree near the pond.

Cousins: Where? Where?

Grandma: People say she only appears when the moon is blue.

(Adjust the lights, cut to bedroom with the brownies (cousins) ready for bed; dim lighting)

Narrator: That night in bed, Brooke and her cousins talked about how much fun it would be to meet the Wise Old Owl, and learn more about Brownies.

(Each line is said as the girls drift off to sleep… girl yawns, then lays down)

Cousin #1: If I met a Brownie... I’d ask that Brownie to clean up my room.

Cousin #2: If I met a Brownie... I’d ask that Brownie to dry the dishes.

Cousin #3: If I met a Brownie... I’d ask that Brownie to take out the garbage.

Cousin #4: I’d ask that Brownie to pull up the weeds.

(Continue in this fashion until each of the Cousins has assigned a chore, until the last girl says as she falls asleep...)

Cousin #6: If only we could meet that Wise Old Owl!

(Pause while they snore... then all the Wise Old Owls enter the scene)

Owl (Circle Leader #1): Whooo, whoooo, I was waiting for you!

(The girls all awake and puzzle over who was talking)

Owl (Circle Leader #2): Whooo, whoooo, I see you!

All Cousins: Are you the Wise Old Owl?

Owl (Circle Leader #3): Whooo, whoooo, that is true, and tonight the moon is blue!

All Cousins: Do you know where we can find a Brownie?

Owl (Circle Leader #4): Come to the pond and you will see...

All Owls: A face in the water who will be Brownie!

(The Owls lead all the Cousins to the pond, where they are met by the Spinners. One Cousin steps in the middle of the circle of Spinners.)

Spinners (Circle Seconds) (All in circle to turn the new girl): Twist me and turn me and show me an elf, I look in the waster and see...

Cousin in Circle (looking in the water): Myself!

(Repeat this until all the Cousins have been through the Spinners. All the Brownies, new and old, then hold hands around the pond and recite the Promise and Law. Each new Brownie is then presented to the commissioner for enrolment).
