Wishing Star Enrolment

Thanks so much to Wendy Baker, who created this ceremony and shared it with the Guiding Mailing List!

Props:

Cardboard gold stars with glitter around the edge and girls' names in the middle
Christmas garland to hang around neck – making name tags for all the leaders, girls and Commissioner
Shaker for the “Magic Brownie dust” glitter
Angel hair or cotton batting
White sheet or blanket
White poster board for clouds
A wand wrapped with gold garland and with a star at the end

Begin with the Brownie Ring and usual Opening ceremonies. Ask the Brownies to be enrolled to leave the Ring and go to the corner where they sit on a white cloud (sheet or blanket). The “twist me and turn me” mirror will have angel hair or cotton batting or similar material to make it appear like a cloud. The stepping-stones to the mirror are also clouds, out of white paper. A Guide helper or one of the Brownie Guiders has a list of the girls to be enrolled, in the pre-set order. She goes to the first one, and taps the girl with her magic wand. She says:- “Starlight, Star Bright, first star I see tonight, I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish for tonight. (Girl’s name), what is your wish?"

The girl stands up and says, “I wish to be a Brownie!”

The leader says, "Then come with me." The leader takes the girl on the cloud stepping stones, to the cloud mirror. The leader twists the girl, and says, “Twist me and turn me and show me an elf. I looked in the water, and there saw myself!”

Circle leader comes and takes the girl to the Commissioner and says “This is __________, who wishes to become a Brownie.”

The Commissioner then says “Your wish is my command. All you have to do is say your Promise and a Brownie you will become." (puts on pin) "I trust you to always keep your Promise as shiny as your enrolment pin." The Commissioner shakes hands and girl goes to Brown Owl who sprinkles her with “Magic Brownie dust” on her head and welcomes her to the magic land of Brownies. Circle leader takes her back to the circle.
