Density Tower

Materials:

• Water
• Corn syrup
• Vegetable oil
• Large clear container
• A variety of objects to float

 Method:

1)     Carefully pour the syrup into the container until it is a quarter full.

2)     Slowly pour the same amount of vegetable oil into the container.

3)     Add the same amount again of water.

4)     The three liquids will separate into layers and float on each other. Now add the objects you plan to float.

 Explanation: each liquid has a different density, and so does each solid. The different solids sink down through the liquids until they reach a liquid of a higher density than themselves.
