Breakdown

Materials:

hydrogen peroxide
raw potato
5-oz. paper cup

Directions:

1) Fill the cup 1/2 full of hydrogen peroxide.
2) Add a slice of raw potato.
3) Observe the results, looking specifically for bubbles of gas.

Explanation: There is a type of enzyme in raw potatoes called catalases. Enzymes are found in all living cells. Their job is to break down complex food chemicals into something simpler and easier to process. The catalase in potato breaks down the hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen gas.
