Removing Iodine From Water
Materials:
- mineral oil
- iodine
- medicine dropper
- water
- small jar with lid
- tablespoon
Directions:
- 1) Fill the jar half full with water.
- 2) Add a few drops of iodine; then replace the lid
and shake (the water should now be light brown).
- 3) Remove the lid; add mineral oil.
- 4) Replace the lid and shake vigorously.
- 5) Let stand a few minutes.
Explanation: The iodine
separates from the water because some combinations of liquids bond together
better than others. In this case, the iodine bonds with the mineral oil better
than with the oil, so it clings to it as it rises to the top of the water.
