Magic Balloon

1 balloon
scissors
bowl of hot tap water
bowl of very cold water
1) Fill the bottle with hot water for the tap. Let the bottle sit for a few minutes, then pour the water out.
2) Cut the neck off the balloon. Stretch the balloon over the mouth of the bottle and pull it down. Stand the bottle in bowl of water. What happens? Explanation: When the bottle is warmed by the hot water, the air inside is warmed too. The warm air expands. When you set the bottle in cold water, the air inside is cooled, and the cooling air contracts. The air pressure outside the bottle is greater than the air pressure inside the bottle, so the air outside tries to move in. The balloon is then sucked in.
