Collapsing Can
Materials:
- hot plate
- empty soda can
- pie pan
- tap water
- tongs
- ruler
Directions:
- 1) Fill the pie pan with about 1 inch of water. Put
the pan on the counter next to the hot plate.
- 2) Pour enough water into the soda can to just cover
the bottom.
- 3) Place the can on the hot plate. Turn the hot
plate on. Heat the water to a boil, and let boil for about 1 minute.
- 4) Have adult use the tongs to quickly turn the can
up-side down in the pan of water.
Explanation: By boiling the
water, most of it turned into steam and left the can. When you turn the can
up-side down in the water, no air can get back in, and the pressure on the can
from the outside is too much for the can.
