Collapsing Can

Materials:

hot plate
empty soda can
pie pan
tap water
tongs
ruler

Directions:

1) Fill the pie pan with about 1 inch of water. Put the pan on the counter next to the hot plate.
2) Pour enough water into the soda can to just cover the bottom.
3) Place the can on the hot plate. Turn the hot plate on. Heat the water to a boil, and let boil for about 1 minute.
4) Have adult use the tongs to quickly turn the can up-side down in the pan of water.

Explanation: By boiling the water, most of it turned into steam and left the can. When you turn the can up-side down in the water, no air can get back in, and the pressure on the can from the outside is too much for the can.
